How China Covid-19 in the beginning of the pandemic tried to “wipe under the rug” – Cinema – Culture +

The documentary, which has been available on LMT Smart Television since August, premiered at this year’s Sandans Film Festival. The film tells the story of the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic and the surrounding skepticism that it could have serious consequences.

Through shocking footage and interviews, the film reflects the confusion that prevailed at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic in the Chinese city of Wuhan, as well as following developments as the virus began to spread in the United States. The film’s author, award-winning director Nanfu Wang, also explores the government’s campaigns to curb the spread of the virus, while also creating misleading news.

The filmmaker from the United States traveled to his hometown in China, about 200 kilometers from Wuhan, where he and his relatives celebrated Chinese New Year. Upon his return to the United States, Van received the first alarming news of the rapid spread of a new, dangerous coronavirus in the region of China he had just visited. Following the social networks of relatives and friends, the director realized that there was panic in the region and hired local Wuhan video operators to document the first days of the new and unexplored virus and its impact on the population.

Vana also regularly received stunning and desperate audio recordings from family members in China who had lost loved ones as a result of the virus.

These recordings were archived and later used in the making of the documentary. As the events unfolded, the director kept in regular contact with individual families in Wuhan, following their daily lives and exploring how they tried to cope with the reality of the virus rapidly taking over the city, while completely destroying the health care system. At that time, Van had a sense that these challenges would be expected in the United States in the near future.

With interviews and stunning shots of emotionally directly involved people – medical staff, patients and members of grieving families from both Wuhan in China and the US, “In One Breath” is a vivid illustration of the devastating effects of the authorities’ mistakes in controlling infection and widespread misinformation today. in the social media space. At the same time, it highlights the strength and perseverance of those who risked everything to still tell the truth.
