How Children’s Perception of Old Age Changes Through Intergenerational Conversations and Games

Bormans let the children play games and have conversations with their own grandparents, but also with elderly people they did not know who have dementia. Because he wanted to know how those children view old age, he had them draw a picture with a specific assignment before and after the games. “The drawings of the unknown elderly people were rather stereotypical,” says Bormans. “Like an old man in front of a television. When they had to draw their own grandparents, we saw more fantasy: someone drew a grandpa and grandma with a parachute.”
