The illusion is perfect. Synthetic Christmas trees are gaining more and more ground every year. Because ? They are often cheaper in the long run, and more environmentally friendly (although this remains debatable). But are they good for our health?
These artificial trees are full of pollutants!
According to Bryan Cummings, a researcher at Drexel University Faculty of Engineering (United States), artificial Christmas trees may release toxic compounds into the air e increase our indoor pollution. Asked by our colleagues from Huffington PostHe explains :
These artificial trees contain plastic and PVC, and one of the main plasticizers in these materials is phthalates (source 1).
Now, it’s no longer a secret, phthalates are considered endocrine disruptorsSt potentially carcinogenic.
Also, plastic Christmas trees are usually covered flame retardants to reduce the risk in case of fire. “If exposed in the long term, these substances can be toxic to the nervous system and/or participate in the development of some types of cancer” underlines the researcher.
Synthetic tree: what precautions to take?
Given its composition, we are therefore tempted not to bet on a synthetic tree. But Bryan Cummings points to it Plastic Christmas trees are not a major source of phthalate exposure. Plastic water bottles, plastic household appliances, plastic toys, plastic decorations… “How many other plastic products do we have at home?”, underlines the researcher.
In summary, if you have many plastic objects at home, a Christmas tree won’t change anythingsays Bryan Cummings. Although the best is still to install it on your balcony or landing.
Finally, even if it’s very cold, don’t forget to ventilate your interior opening the windows for at least 10 minutes every day. You can also bet on an air purifier.
