The association between Snapchat and Bitmoji has been around for a while, but Snapchat’s acquisition of the custom emoji app in 2016 meant it would be here to stay. Fans seem to like the way Snapchat has incorporated Bitmoji into the app, or at the very least, the fact that they are easy to ignore. There are cute custom Bitmoji to use in chats with friends or in the different stories in the app that insert you and a friend in wacky animated conversations.

But recently, Snapchat added a feature that includes Bitmojis in its notification bar. That means every time you get a message or call from one of your friends, your Bitmoji appears next to the alert, if you have one. When Snapchat made this change to the way notifications are displayed, it was the default setting, so tons of people started randomly seeing Bitmojis where they weren’t before. The app may have thought this would be a good option, but there are people who are not happy with the change. As with everything else that people don’t like, they took to Twitter to express their dislike of the new feature.

While Snapchat probably thought this would be a cute way to personalize the app even more for its users, some say this change is useless. One person even said that the new feature makes things feel “much more intimate before you even read the message.” Many people are recognizing that the update is not a big deal, but they feel that it is too much to have along with the sea of notifications that they are already receiving from other applications.

However, not everyone feels this way and some people are taking the update at face value. It’s a more personal addition to Snapchat that showcases your friends’ creativity.
