How can I donate my organs? Here we explain it to you – El Sol de Puebla

Did you know that in Mexico there are almost 23 thousand people on the waiting list to receive an organ transplant or tissue? If you want that your organs provide an opportunity to another life, then it is important that you know how you can be an organ donor in Mexico, what types of donations exist and who can be donors.

And it is that, according to the most recent report of the National Transplant Center, a total of 22 thousand 988 people are on the waiting list during the second half of 2021, being the kidney the one with the most recipients on the list, with a record of 16 thousand 801 registered, followed by the corneas with 5 thousand 812 and the liver with 322.

HOW CAN YOU BE AN ORGAN DONOR?

From the outset, it is important to mention that a donor is the person who makes the decision in life that, upon death, their organs or tissues are given through the National Donation and Transplant Subsystem, so that another person can save their life or improve its quality.

If you decide to be, you must inform your family or loved ones; This is important because when a person loses their life and their family members are aware of their decision to be a donor, it is easier for them to know how to respond and give authorization.

The other option is to register for a “Donor card”, same that you can process in:

• The National Transplant Center, on its website

• In any other organization that campaigns in favor of organ and / or tissue donation

• In Hospitals that have programs of donation and / or transplantation

It should be noted that the donation will depend on the characteristics of the death, so that, when the time comes, the doctors will determine which organs and tissues are suitable for transplantation.

WHAT KIND OF DONATIONS ARE THERE?

According to the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) there are two types of donations

DONATION IN LIFE

The people between 18 and 65 years oldAfter passing a series of medical and psychological studies, they can donate a kidney, a segment of the liver, umbilical cord blood and bone marrow, in order not to put their health at risk. Likewise, they must meet the following requirements:

• Be compatible with the transplant recipient

• Receive complete information about the risks of the operation and the consequences of the removal of the organ or tissue

• Have given your consent in writing

• Transplants will preferably be carried out between family members; Otherwise, you must give your consent before a Notary Public in a document in which you state that you will donate for free, altruistic, free and consenting

DONATION AFTER DEATH

The people between 2 and 80 years old who have lost their lives due to brain death or irreversible cardiac arrest, can be donors as long as their medical tests are positive.

From these donors organs such as: heart, lungs, liver, pancreas, intestine, kidneys or tissues such as corneas, skeletal muscle tissue, corneas, heart valves, bone and skin are obtained.

The General Health Law (LGS) indicates that, once the loss of life has been certified, a legally responsible family member (husband, children, parents or siblings) must authorize the donation in writing, and that in those cases where death is is related to a crime, the authorization of the Public Ministry will be requested.
