How can Christmas be celebrated in Bremen this year?

As quickly as the meeting between the Chancellor and Prime Minister went on Sunday, the Christmas rules are so complex. Who can go with whom in Bremen? An overview.

Even if more is allowed during the Christmas holidays, the Bremen government asked for a waiver if possible so as not to endanger friends and family.

“Strict, but true to life”, the Mayor of Bremen, Andreas Bovenschulte, called the rules that should now apply to Christmas on Sunday. Originally Bremen did not want to make any exceptions during the holidays, but then the decision was made in favor of the federal course. That means: Bremen residents can now do more at Christmas, but still not much.

From December 24th to 26th inclusive, the group of permitted persons will be expanded: In addition to a household, up to four adults who come from the “closest family circle” may join, according to the decision paper. A term with room for interpretation; That is why politics provided an exact definition at the same time: What is meant are “spouses, civil partners and partners in a non-marital partnership as well as straight relatives, siblings, siblings and their respective household members.”

In plain language: Theoretically, more than five adults are possible at Christmas, even more than two households are possible. However, there are constellations in which caution is required. A couple of explanatory scenarios:

  • Example 1: The Menke couple would like to celebrate Christmas at home. The couple would like to invite their adult child, who in turn has a spouse and two children. The children are both over 14 years old, but everything would be within the framework: According to the regulation, it is one household plus four people, i.e. exactly the number of people allowed. At this point it would not be relevant if the two children might live in other households again.
  • Example 2: The Aydincioglu couple would like to celebrate Christmas at home too and have two children, both with a spouse and both with their own children. However, the children are all under 14 years old. Here, too, it would be household plus exactly four people, since children under the age of 14 are not counted.
  • Example 3: With the Meier family it gets difficult: Mr. and Mrs. Meier have three grown children, all of them have a partner. That would be a household plus six people; so two too many. For example, two of the partners would have to stay at home.
  • Example 4: Ms. Nowak and Ms. Schmied also have to rethink their Christmas plans. The two women, who live together, would like to invite Mrs. Nowak’s parents, as well as her uncle and aunt. That would actually be a household plus four people, but the regulation only extends to relatives in a “straight line” – and according to the definition, this does not include uncle and aunt. Ms. Nowak, however, is allowed to invite her brother and sister. It is also possible that she only invites her uncle and aunt and no one else. Because of course the other regulation also applies: Up to five people from two different households can meet.
