College football betting isn’t exactly alien to the national football league (NFL).
While the NFL is America’s first professional football league, college football is played by teams of student-athletes from American or Canadian universities, colleges, and military academies.
This is an excellent place to start if you’re new to college football betting. Read on to find out how to make your first CFB predictions online.
Ways to Bet on College Football
The three most basic ways to bet on college football are:
● Point spread
● Moneyline and
● Over/under (total).
1. Point spread
This creates a balance between the two teams where one is more advantaged (favourite), and the other is an underdog. The point spread is the number of points a team is expected to win or lose in a game made by a bookie.
For instance, in a game between two teams, ‘ X’ And ‘Y,’ where X is expected to win by 5.5 points, bookies will set X as the favourite represented by a negative value (-5.5). This means team X will have to win the game by 6 or more points to cover the spread.
Team Y is set as the point spread underdog indicated by a positive value (+5.5). This means team Y can either win the game flat or lose by fewer than or equal to 5.5 points to cover the spread.
2. Moneyline
Moneyline bets are the simplest. All you need to do is pick a team you expect to win a game and place your bet. Each team will have a moneyline value assigned to them.
The work here is that teams with a higher possibility of winning come with lower returns but less risk, whereas the underdogs have a higher return but are very risky.
3. Over/Under (total)
Here a total number of combined points between two teams in a game is arrived at via estimations. In this example of a match between team A and team B, bookies predict that both teams will reach a combined score of 70 points.
College bettors have to bet ‘over’ if they think the total point will be more than 70 points or ‘under’ if they don’t believe that the game will have many points.
4. Futures
This is a long-term betting option rather than a single game. Futures are usually posted before the season, and bets commence, lasting throughout the schedule. Adjustments are made on the odds, injuries/trades, and betting action until a final agreement is reached on the future market.
With future bets, you can win big, but you have to bet early and wait throughout the entire season to redeem your wins.
