“How Apple AirTag can Help Recover Stolen Cars in New York City: NYPD’s Modern Solution”

The New York police and also the mayor of the city, Eric Adams, have come up with a somewhat unconventional, but modern solution to the fight against car theft in the big city – they invite you to use “Apple AirTag” to fight against theft and give the police more opportunities to find the car.

“21. 21st century problems require 21st century policing. An AirTag on your car can help us find and recover it. Let’s use drones, modern technology and good old investigative work to safely recover your car. Help us help you, use AirTag,” Police Department Chief Jeffrey Madry wrote on Twitter.

In the USA, thefts of certain Kia and Hyundai models became a serious problem. It was extremely easy to drive them away and there was a tutorial on how to do it on TikTok. Although Korean automakers have worked to eliminate this problem and have partially done so, it does not mean that the problem no longer exists.

Technically, “AirTag” can help find a stolen car, but there are also problems – “AirTag” has a built-in mechanism to prevent tracking for malicious purposes. For example, a bad guy puts a device in your bag and then tracks you. Respectively, if the car is stolen by a thief with an iPhone and he glances at his smartphone every now and then, he will see that the car is in “AirTag” – there will be a notification about it. There are also apps available for Android that allow you to find AirTags. Maybe it should just be hidden very well in the car, so that it is not profitable for the thief to waste time looking for the device?

Anyway, the NYPD sees this as a good solution and to promote it, 500 AirTags have been given away to residents. There’s no guarantee it will help, but you can always try.
