One such eater is the always-on screen (AoD) mode. It appeared on Android devices a long time ago, but it debuted on iPhones relatively recently. This setting in itself is useful, but not everyone realizes how many invaluable percentages of charge it drains from the smartphone’s battery.
How Always On Display works
The Always On Display feature allows the user to view basic information on the display even when the device is in standby mode or locked. In a darkened view, users can view the current time, alerts, main widgets, and custom animations.
The principle of operation is simple: the ability to quickly check important information without turning on the entire smartphone. Additionally, Always-on Display improves the overall user experience by eliminating the need to constantly turn the screen on and off, which is tedious and time-consuming.
How much does Always On Display charge?
Previously DxOMark specialists tested battery consumption with the AoD function turned off and on and came to the conclusion that with the active option the phone discharges about 3-5 times faster than without it.
For clarity, the top-end iPhone lasted 466 hours in standby mode without AoD and 122 hours with AoD. Pixel – 367 and 139 hours, Xiaomi – 495 and 103 hours, Galaxy – 417 and 136 hours.
Moreover, Always On Display reportedly kills not only the battery, but also the display. For the convenience of being constantly aware of incoming notifications, some users sacrifice burnt-out pixels.

How to disable Always On Display
- On iPhone (available only on iPhone 14 and 15) go to settings, look for the “Display and Brightness” section and deactivate the toggle switch next to “Always on”
- If you have an Android smartphone, go to the “Lock screen and security” menu and turn the “Always show” toggle switch to the inactive position.
