Mrs. Lieke van Maren (fictitious name) has been coming to me occasionally for more than ten years for ‘maintenance treatment’ for her headaches and migraines. Lieke is an energetic and cheerful woman of 49 years old and married to Herman. They have three children and their own company with more than 250 employees.
Since the age of 15, Lieke suffered from severe headaches 3 to 4 days a week. Neurological examination revealed no demonstrable cause. After suffering for 20 years, in 2004 she read about a well-conducted scientific study that showed that acupuncture helped with headaches and migraines better than conventional medications. British researchers published these sensational results in the critical medical journal the British Medical Journal.
Disbelief
Lieke did not believe in acupuncture. But: ‘It doesn’t help, it doesn’t do any harm,’ she told me in our first conversation. I hear that from many people during the first consultation. They are right: acupuncture is completely harmless and has no unpleasant side effects. And you don’t have to believe in acupuncture: it does its job anyway.
Complaint-free
After a series of treatments of about 8 weeks, Lieke was virtually free of complaints. The attacks had practically stopped. And when she had occasional problems, the severity was much less. Currently, Lieke visits once every 3 months for a so-called maintenance treatment. She has hardly had any annoying headaches for years.
Proven
At the time, the WHO (World Health Organization of the UN) included headaches on a list of conditions: conditions and diseases that, according to this organization, acupuncture helps. This lists more than 100 pain, inflammatory, chronic, psychological and fertility complaints for which the WHO considers the effectiveness of acupuncture to be proven. That is why the WHO recommends acupuncture as a treatment for headaches and the other conditions on that ranking.
