You could see him in the drama Day for my love or in the comedy The Secret of the Castle in the Carpathians. But because of an unhappy love, Jan Hartl closed in on himself. You probably wouldn’t recognize him today.

An up-and-coming actor

Jan Hartl was born on September 12, 1952 in Prague. Even as a small boy, he wanted to become an actor. He regularly attended the drama club and it was no surprise to anyone when he applied to DAMU.

He successfully completed the theater faculty in 1975. After that, he was a regular at Zdenek Nejedlý’s Realistic Theater for 13 years. Jan Hartl was an extremely talented actor who had no problem playing both tragic and comedic characters.

You could see him in many different productions, as they were Strakon piper, Seagull, Crime and Punishment, Servant of Two Masters and more.

He also guested in other theaters. He worked for a year at the Theater in Vinohrady and for the next five years at the Theater behind the Gate. Jan Hartl also played at the National Theatre, where he played in many successful productions, such as Faust, Night after whether Doctor Fischer from Geneva.

But the handsome and talented actor didn’t just excel on boards that mean the world. He also demonstrated his talent on the film screen. His first work was a film Deacon, throw him in the machine!filmed in 1974.

Unrequited love

Jiří Hartl was not only a popular actor, but also a man that many women wanted. His partners were actresses Milena Steinmasslova whether Veronika Žilkova.

But his life partner became a woman named Olga Škopková. A trained journalist and doctor, with whom the actor found much-needed peace. The actor had two children with Olga, but throughout his life he did not talk much about his privacy.

Olga Škopková died in 2007, which broke the actor’s heart. After the death of his fateful wife, he became even more withdrawn and, due to grief, changed beyond recognition. He has aged, and today you would hardly find the once charismatic actor in him.

His last film role was a film Golden slip from 2018. The last time you could see him on stage was in a production Audience with the Queen. Unrequited love took its toll on him.
