How a Stolen Steam Deck was Successfully Recovered by the Police – A Reddit User’s Story

The story behind how a user who had his Steam Deck stolen overseas got it back after about 3 months.Posted on Reddit(The post was deleted after it was published) and has become a hot topic.

The “Steam Deck” in the car was stolen!

The incident occurred in November 2023. The victim, Reddit user LetMe-SoloHer, parked his car in the parking lot of a retro game shop and waited in his car in order to sell Steam Deck face-to-face to other users through Facebook Marketplace. It was a nice day and the car windows were open.

He sent an email to inquire about the arrival time of his business partner, but immediately after that, the suspect reached through the passenger window, stole the Steam Deck, and fled. He immediately chased after her, but was unable to catch up with her and called the police. The transaction location appears to have been specified by the transaction partner (suspect).

Police arrived a few minutes later and spotted the suspect on the store’s surveillance camera. He filed a complaint and submitted evidence and returned home. After that, there was an interaction with the police, and although the suspect was safely arrested, the stolen Steam Deck had already been sold to another person.

“Steam Deck” was safely returned thanks to the efforts of the police officer in charge

He asked Steam Support for the serial number of the device he purchased and then contacted the police officer with the information provided. He also discussed charges against the person who stole the Steam Deck, and decided to charge him with selling stolen goods and robbery. The crime is second-degree, and it seems that this is considered robbery because “someone was inside the car when it was stolen.”

Furthermore, the police officer in charge obtained information such as the account signed into his Steam Deck through Steam Support. It seems that “Steam Deck” had already been in the hands of another person, but he contacted the last owner and asked him to return the product, and it was safely delivered to him.

The post included an image of the “Steam Deck” that was safely returned and the documents that had been sent, and thanked everyone for their efforts in resolving the issue. In the replies in the thread, many people responded and he answered a variety of questions. In addition, at first I did not use the Steam Deck much and intended to sell it, but now that I have returned it, I have kept it carefully and commented, “I have no intention of selling it anymore.”
