The photo of a plume of black smoke appeared on Twitter Monday afternoon and was shared by multiple verified accounts with blue ticks. The text accompanying the photo stated that it was a large explosion near the Pentagon.
The Twitter post was launched by user OSINTdefender, who describes himself as “Open Source Intelligence MonitorThe message was later deleted.
The fake news had already been picked up and broadcast by a major Indian TV station. Also the Russian news channel RT initially reported the explosion, but withdrew coverage after it was clear the incident had not occurred.
The Virginia Fire Department was called to report that there had been no explosion at the United States Department of Defense building in Arlington. Nevertheless, the US S&P 500 index could not be prevented from falling briefly by 0.26 percent. The stock index recovered after the photo was found to be fake.
