Neither reaction is bad. The child who, in the 1950s, amused himself by observing this rat carcass – some say it was a cat – every time he came home has become a famous author of thrillers: Stephen King. As for the little girl who, twenty-five years ago, petitioned her neighbors for rat extermination in the area near her home, she has just been named “Rat Czarina” of New York, the tasked with the toughest job of ridding the city of steel of the millions of rodents that infest the streets and homes.
