Houthis: They claimed responsibility for an attack on a Greek-owned cargo ship – 2024-02-18 13:27:11

Yemen’s Houthi rebels have tonight claimed responsibility for the missile attack on the cargo ship “Lycavitos” in the Gulf of Aden. The briefing by the Iranian-backed rebels refers to a “British ship”.

The Barbados-flagged bulk carrier is operated by Helikon Shipping Enterprises, which has offices in London, Athens and Dalian, China. The company confirmed that it is a Greek-owned ship and described as “informative” – without going into further details – the information released by the British agency for the safety of commercial shipping UKMTO.

In the afternoon, UKMTO said it had received a report of an explosion near a ship, about 85 nautical miles east of Aden, adding that its crew was safe. The crew members were not injured, confirmed the British marine insurance company Ambrey, which reported minor damage caused by fragments of the missile.

Since mid-November, the Houthis have been launching drone and missile attacks on merchant ships in the Red Sea in a show of solidarity with Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, which is being pounded by the Israeli military.
