SANAA – Houthi Yaman announced the completion of the exchange of Hamas detainees imprisoned in Saudi Arabia with Saudi officials detained in Yemen.

This statement was made in a speech delivered by the leader of the Houthis, Abdel-Malik Al-Houthi, to commemorate the start of the Islamic New Year.

According to the Saba news agency, Al-Houthi described the Saudi punishment of Palestinians who he said had been “kidnapped” and imprisoned in Saudi jails as an act of “oppression”.

He stressed that the problem Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have with Hamas is that Hamas is involved in fighting Israel’s illegal occupation in the eyes of the international community.

“We renewed our offer to the Saudi authorities that we are ready to release Saudi officers in exchange for the release of Palestinian prisoners,” he said.

Al-Houthi did not say how many Saudi officials were detained by his movement.

On Sunday, a Saudi court held trials for 69 Palestinians and Jordanians, then sentenced 24 of them to various prison terms ranging from five years to 22 years and acquitted the other defendants.

Hamas’s official envoy to the Saudis, Mohammad Al-Khodari, 81, was sentenced to 15 years in prison despite suffering from cancer and requiring urgent medical treatment.
