Houthi: Deadly attack on ship in Red Sea – 2024-03-08 05:36:13

A merchant ship was damaged in an attack south of Yemen and coalition forces are providing support to it, Britain’s maritime security agency UKMTO said. This is the Barbados-flagged ship True Confidence, American interests, with the management company in Cyprus.

The ship was hit by an entity posing as the “Yemen Navy” and ordered to change course, British insurer Ambrey said separately. “Ambrey observed an Indian Navy warship sailing in close proximity to the last known position of the vessel in question (…) Further reports indicate that search and rescue operations are underway, it said, adding that crew members boarded lifeboats . The incident took place about 57 nautical miles southwest of the southern Yemeni port of Aden, it said.

According to a US defense official, smoke was seen coming from a Barbados-flagged dry cargo ship, the True Confidence, off the southern coast of Yemen near Aden. The official, who requested anonymity, told Reuters that a lifeboat was also seen in the sea near the ship, without elaborating.

A shipping source said that three crew members of the ship in question are missing and four others have suffered serious burns. The source, who declined to be named, added that the ship appears to have been abandoned. Sources of the Ministry of Shipping state that there were no Greeks on board.

Houthi fighters in Yemen have launched drone and missile attacks against ships in the Red Sea, the Bab al-Madeb Strait and the Gulf of Aden since November.

They say they are acting in solidarity with the Palestinians over the war Israel has launched against the Gaza Strip after the deadly attack by the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas in southern Israel on October 7.
