Housing minister Hugo de Jonge has responded to his much-discussed comment about people with disabilities. “Just joking, don’t make more of it,” he said. At the table Humberto was – again – reacted with surprise. “Oh-oh-oh…”

In a report by political reporter Jaïr Ferwerda about the departure of Lucille Werner from the House of Representatives, De Jonge shared his memories of her last Friday. At that moment a car approached, on which Ferwerda pulled De Jonge forward so that he was not run over.

De Jonge then decided to thank Ferwerda in a special way for his rescue action: “Thank you for protecting me from being run over, otherwise I would have ended up with a disability.” He was referring to the disability of Lucille Werner, who herself has difficulty walking.

Hugo de Jonge would be ‘a crazy man’ because of a joke

At the talk show table, the reaction was already full of surprise. De Jonge was called a “crazy man”. Lucille Werner also responded. “What I find complicated about this is that people with disabilities should be seen as potential. As people who can do something, who can be happy. And not as pathetic, vulnerable or as an object of concern.”

Now Hugo de Jonge himself has responded to his joke and the commotion that arose afterwards. “Ai, ai, that restriction joke turned out a bit wrong, didn’t it”, Jaïr Ferwerda confronted him with his statements.

De Jonge has absolutely no regrets about the disability joke

The outgoing housing minister responded by saying: “Yeah, you know: just a joke. Don’t make more of it than it is. I don’t think we should make it any bigger than that,” he told the camera yesterday.

Did he not regret his statements afterwards? “No, no,” he laughed. “If you have to regret jokes, then it all becomes very complicated. No, an innocent joke. And we just go back to work.”

“Oh, oh, oh, it’s unbelievable”

“Oh, oh, oh,” was the first reaction at the talk show table Humberto. There the guests looked at the fragment in amazement. “It reminds me a bit of Rubiales,” said Saskia Belleman, court reporter of The Telegraph. The president of the Spanish Football Federation is currently under fire for inappropriate behavior by a female footballer.

According to her, De Jonge should have apologized immediately. “That you’re not just able to say, ‘It was just a clumsy statement on my part. I shouldn’t have done this’.” The others nod. “Yes, then this is over. Now it’s still not over. It is unbelievable.”
