Since 2010, almost 3,000 new dormitory places have been created for students in Hesse, which are subsidized by the state. This was announced by Housing Minister Tarek Al-Wazir and Science Minister Angela Dorn.
“In the coming years there will be many more, because we have already approved state funding for more than 1,000 dormitory places. We are investing record funds in improving the living situation of students: In total, we are making more than 150 million euros available to fund new affordable dormitory places for social housing in eleven Hessian cities, ”said Dorn and Al-Wazir.
Hessen has caught up
According to statistics from the German Student Union, Hessen has clearly caught up in the number of dormitories since 2013 and has the highest percentage growth of all federal states (winter semester 2019/20) at around 18.5 percent. Most of the living space for students was subsidized in Frankfurt am Main and Darmstadt: In Frankfurt, the state provided subsidies for 1,294 places in dormitories, 761 of which have already been completed. 1,201 places were funded and built in Darmstadt. But new dormitories have also been added in other college and university cities in recent years, for example in Fulda (84), Geisenheim (27), Gießen (253), Kassel (260), Marburg (140), Offenbach (59) and Wiesbaden (211). In addition, the state provided additional funding for new dormitory places in Dieburg and Vellmar. For 282 dormitory places in Kassel and Marburg, funding of around 16.6 million euros was applied for from the state this year.
Record funding for student housing
“Thanks to state funding, the number of affordable dormitories for students has been increasing in all eleven university cities for years. Nevertheless, the offer is still insufficient. Our goal is to be able to offer around ten percent of the students a place in a state-sponsored dormitory in the medium to long term. That is why we continue to provide record funding, ”said Dorn and Al-Wazir.
As of January 1, 2021, there were a total of around 16,800 state-subsidized student residence halls in Hesse. Of these, around 12,200 were in dormitories of the five Hessian student unions and around 4,600 with other providers. Around 224,000 students are enrolled at the universities of the State of Hesse. This means that around 7.5 percent of students at the state’s universities have a place in a state-sponsored dormitory with correspondingly low rents.
The average rent for a place in a student residence for all types of housing in the facilities of the Hessian student union is around 280 euros including ancillary costs.
