Housing benefit is one of the most important social benefits available in Germany. The rent subsidy is regulated in the Housing Benefit Act and is for citizens who cannot pay the rent on their own because their income is too low. You can also get a subsidy for the costs of being in your own home.

It was only at the beginning of 2023 that there was a major reform of housing benefits, meaning that more citizens are entitled to social benefits and in some cases also receive more money. Many people will be happy about housing benefit reform. For many people, however, what is still important is when housing benefit starts being paid out to the account in the respective month.

Payment of housing benefit: Submit your claim in good time

If you want to receive housing benefit, you must complete a housing benefit application online. This is then forwarded to the city or town’s housing welfare authority. How high the individual housing benefit is depends on several factors such as the members of the household or the applicant’s income. However, since the housing benefit reform, the rent subsidy can be higher. Then only the housing benefit authority has to accept the housing benefit application.

It is important that retroactive payments of housing benefit by the housing benefit office are only possible to a limited extent – usually only for one month. By the way, you can also transfer the housing benefit to the account of the landlord or a third party with the housing benefit authority when it is paid. However, this must be recorded when applying for housing benefit. Housing benefit is usually paid for twelve months.

Housing benefit payment: When will the money end up in the account?

As the housing benefit is intended to support the recipient in paying rent, it must be in the account on time. As rent is usually paid in Germany at the end of the previous month, the housing benefit from the housing benefit office must be in the recipient’s account by this time.

It is the responsibility of anyone receiving housing benefit to notify the relevant housing benefit office in good time of any changes to their living situation that are relevant to their receipt. This can be done by submitting a new housing benefit application to the housing benefit authority. If this does not happen and the recipient has taken an unauthorized benefit, there may be sanctions or the cessation of rent subsidy payments.
