In recent years, New York City has been immersed in an ever-growing housing affordability crisis
That’s why the ‘Yes for Housing’ coalition, made up of more than 120 pro-tenant organizations, met at City Hall on Wednesday to support a series of policy reforms. of housing in the city.
“In themselves, they are very old rules, they are more or less from the 60s that were created in the city to segregate, to build certain types of housing in certain parts, and what we now want to do is eliminate those limitations to be able to build the housing that we need and that is affordable housing, that is safe housing,” said Gabriela Sandoval, of the New Destiny Coalition.
One of the many organizations that participated in the protest at the mayor’s office was the NYHousing Conference, which posted a message on social media about it.
“Today, the #YestoHousing coalition rallied at City Hall Park to support Yes City for Housing Opportunities. We had a great turnout supporting zoning changes and common sense housing,” the message reads.

And thus eliminate unnecessary barriers that slow down the construction of housing in different neighborhoods, especially so that the city is more fair and welcoming for people from all social strata.
“New Destiny is the only entity in New York City that focuses 100% on the solution of permanent housing for victims of domestic violence, we develop buildings,” added Sandoval.
They add that these measures will support the creation of 150,000 new housing units in all neighborhoods of the city in the next 15 years.
“Nowadays, there are mandates that require buildings to have a certain amount of parking for example and then parking takes away, makes the development itself, the building more expensive and takes away space that could be used for apartments, for housing. There are also certain mandates that make it impossible to build ‘basements’ that are regularized,” Sandoval explained.
The coalition says they are committed to working closely with residents and government leaders to implement reforms that ensure equitable access to safe and affordable housing for all.
