Housework – therapy for body and soul

It strengthens health, sharpens the mind and makes the body resistant to trauma, a study shows

Washing, ironing, vacuuming, maintaining the garden are usually considered ungrateful and tedious duties. But it turns out that home maintenance tasks are good for health, especially for the elderly. At least that’s what scientists say.

A Singaporean research team found that people over the age of 65 who spend more time cleaning their homes have greater physical strength, a sharper mind and greater resilience to falls and injuries. The benefits of housework contribute

participants,

point out the authors of the test, quoted by the Daily Mail.

They surveyed 500 volunteers between the ages of 21 and 90 about the volume and frequency of housekeeping and other physical activities and sports they practice. Compared to their health status, housework shows a very high result.

Specialists classify as light household chores washing dishes, dusting, making beds, loading the washing machine, ironing, cleaning the house, cooking.

Among the hard work they order is washing windows, changing bed linen, vacuuming, washing and polishing the floor, light repairs and installations such as DIY.

In general, the combination of easier and more demanding duties is associated with well-preserved intelligence and memory in people over 65 – something that is not observed in younger people.

Retirees engaged in heavier homework have a 14 percent higher ability to concentrate, and those engaged in lighter tasks are 12 percent better, the test shows.

Those who make more serious physical efforts at home get up from a sitting position more energetically and quickly, have better balance and coordination. The researchers conclude that this protects them from fatal injuries and fractures – a common reason for adults to be hospitalized.

However, the authors of the test, conducted by the University of Singapore, emphasize that in order to conclusively prove the link between housework and healthy aging, more research is needed. But they add that working from home keeps the mind and is an indicator of the ability of older people to lead independent lives.

“Our results show that regular housework is associated with better mental abilities and better physical capacity. But only among the older age group, “said study leader Prof. Shiu Lian Wee to the British Medical Journal. He adds that the benefits are especially significant in the field of cognitive functions, attention, memory in the elderly.

One hour of work in the yard – weeding, hoeing, planting – can burn about 330 calories – 2/3 of those that we melt in the gym.

Just 30 minutes of plant activity lowers high blood pressure. They are also cardio training. Maintaining a garden involves movement, bending, standing, physical activity that stimulates the heart.

Gardening acts as a remedy for the soul – reduces the symptoms of depression and anxiety and stress, removes you mentally from the problems of everyday life. That

dopamine, serotonin, endorphins and oxytocin, which counteract cortisol. It lifts the mood, makes you smile. Working in the greenery improves self-confidence, you feel capable and active.

However, take into account the load with the capabilities of your body and your health – overdoing carries risks. If you are old, avoid bending over for a long time, lifting heavy. Take frequent breaks, spare your back and neck. Even 10 minutes of moderate activity a day is good for your health and tone. But before embarking on this refreshing activity, consult a doctor.
