Housewives Most Vulnerable to HIV/AIDS Transmission in Tasikmalaya City: Homosexual Husbands Identified as Primary Source

Tasikmalaya – Housewives are the group most vulnerable to contracting HIV/AIDS in Tasikmalaya City. These women also automatically transmit the HIV virus to their children, thereby triggering an increase in cases of HIV/AIDS transmission.

What is important to note is that the majority of housewives do not engage in casual sex. In many cases, it is known that they were infected by their husbands who were homosexuals.

Secretary of the Tasikmalaya City AIDS Commission (KPA), Tarlan, said that the largest group of HIV/AIDS transmitters in Tasikmalaya City are homosexuals. Meanwhile, pregnant women or housewives are in second place.

“The biggest are homosexuals or MSM, that’s the biggest in 2023. Then the second biggest is pregnant women, this is quite surprising,” said Tarlan after holding a coordination meeting with the Tasikmalaya City Government and a number of other parties, Tuesday (12/12/2023) .

Tarlan explained that the high rate of transmission of HIV/AIDS among housewives, the majority of whom were infected by their homosexual husbands. “Because like this, many homosexuals have wives to get rid of the impression that they are homosexuals. At first he was positive, his wife also got it, then the wife gave birth, their child got it too, so the transmission continued like that,” explained Tarlan.

He explained that in 2023 there would be 117 new cases of transmission discovered. This figure is lower than in 2022 when there were 145 cases recorded.

“In 2023 until October there will be 117 cases. This means it is smaller, because in 2022 there will be 145 cases,” said Tarlan.

Meanwhile, the cumulative number of HIV/AIDS sufferers in Tasikmalaya City was recorded at 1,162 cases. Tarlan added that apart from continuing to carry out outreach, his party is also trying to continue to expand inspections.

“We continue to carry out outreach, education and awareness of the dangers. Don’t have sexual relations outside of marriage, don’t have same-sex relationships. Then for those who have been exposed, we provide assistance, so that they want to seek treatment, that there is still hope for life,” explained Tarlan.

Acting Mayor of Tasikmalaya, Cheka Virgowansyah, said that HIV/AIDS is a global issue that the world has planned to eliminate by 2030. “By 2030 there must be zero HIV infections, zero deaths due to HIV/AIDS, and zero discrimination against sufferers,” said Cheka.

To achieve this target, Cheka said concrete efforts were needed to break the chain of HIV/AIDS transmission. The endemic HIV virus in Indonesia has not yet been overcome, even though various programs have been implemented for approximately 20 years.

“The trend of transmission of cases with the highest presentation occurs in homosexual groups. This concern becomes deeper because almost 90 percent of them are of productive age,” concluded Cheka.
