Houses in Rotterdam evacuated due to risk of collapse

Foundation work was under way under the houses

NOS News

In Rotterdam-West, a number of homes have been evacuated head over heels because of the risk of collapse. A resident heard a bang this morning and saw smoke. The fire brigade then found that the building on the 1e Middellandstraat was about to collapse. The smoke was probably a cloud of dust.

Under the building, which has two floors, there is a butcher and a jeweler. There they were engaged in foundation work. It is being investigated whether the risk of collapse is the result of the work.

Not back for now

According to the fire service, the back of the building is detached from the facade. Because there is a good chance that the building will collapse, the street is closed to traffic. Trams are diverted.

Residents are not allowed to return for the time being. They’ve been taken care of.
