Würzburg’s new district administrator Thomas Eberth has obtained information from the waste management association about waste disposal security in the Würzburg area.
The district office announced this in a press release. Eberth and Würzburg’s mayor Christian Schuchardt have also been deputy chairmen of the special-purpose association since his election. The chairwoman of the association is currently the Tamara Bishop of Kitzingen.
During his inaugural visit, he informed the mayors Roland Schmitt from Rottendorf and Stefan Wolfshörndl from Gerbrunn about the progress in renewing kiln line 1 at the Würzburg waste-to-energy plant and about other current projects of the special-purpose association.
Landfill prepared as an interim storage facility for household waste
The dismantling of the furnace line started a year ago. The plant from 1984 has been technically renewed since then, which increases its energy efficiency. The two other incineration lines meanwhile ensure waste disposal security. “We are right in front of the finish line,” said managing director Alexander Kutscher. The new line 1 should be completed by the end of the year. A first trial fire is planned for August.
Eberth, together with Ochsenfurt’s mayor Peter Juks, got an idea of the operational security of the interim storage facility, the landfill in Hopferstadt. Household waste can be packed into bales in the new delivery hall and then stored at the landfill for up to twelve months. Helmut Schenk, head of the material flow management in the special-purpose association, expects the interim storage facility to go into operation at the end of June.
Citizens and politicians would closely monitor the use of the landfill, the message goes on – above all the further procedure with backfill sections 3 and 4, which are not used due to a legal dispute. The special-purpose association reached an agreement with two plaintiffs and hopes for an agreement with the third plaintiff, the city of Ochsenfurt.
Enable professional disposal of building rubble
Eberth sees a need for action among other things with building rubble. “The municipalities will have to carry out numerous renovation measures in the next few years. Private households also take care of maintaining the value of their buildings. We have to give citizens and communities the opportunity to dispose of their material properly. ”
The Würzburg area benefits from the fact that waste disposal lies with the general interest association. The expansion of the district heating network makes an important contribution to long-term, secure and climate-friendly energy supply.
Until 2018, the energy obtained from waste incineration was only fed into the Würzburger Stadtwerke network. With the connection of Gut Wöllried and the Rottendorf development area “Am Sand”, the bridge to the district was achieved. In the future, other areas could also be supplied with district heating from the waste-to-energy plant.
