Household gas bills tripled in a year | Consumer

European energy prices went through the roof again on Monday. Consumers see the gas and electricity bill taking increasingly larger bites out of their budget, De Tijd writes today.

According to the most recent figures from energy regulator CREG, the electricity bill for an average Flemish family amounted to 1,319.27 euros in November 2021, compared to 914.67 euros in November 2020. The gas bill increased even more explosively, from 934.90 euros in November 2020 to 2,708. .68 euros this year, just short of a tripling.

These figures include the nuance that the CREG does not take into account those who still have a current permanent contract in its calculation, the business newspaper emphasizes. The amount is the representation of what someone who has a contract in November pays on an annual basis for his gas or electricity bill.

“That difference between variable and fixed rates is indeed important,” says Stephane Pirotte, who follows market developments for the French energy supplier Engie to De Tijd. In Belgium, 35 percent of households have a variable contract for electricity and 45 percent for natural gas. “But the energy crisis and rising prices are undeniably becoming tangible for everyone in society, both businesses and consumers.”

The alarm bells on the European energy market went red again on Monday. The Dutch TTF future, the reference price for natural gas in Europe, closed at 147 euros per megawatt hour, a record level and an eightfold increase compared to the beginning of this year.

The electricity price, which is closely related to the gas price, also went through the roof in all European countries. The French electricity price is at its highest level since 2009, partly due to problems with nuclear power stations that are not working.
