A houseboat in Maastricht became loose in the night from Wednesday to Thursday and ended up against a bridge. This happened at the location where part of a dike was washed away on Wednesday.

There was no one left in the houseboat. All houseboats between the Maas and the Zuid-Willemsvaart in the Boschpoort district were evacuated earlier on Wednesday.

Both the houseboat and the bridge in the Stuwweg suffered damage. The houseboat is still against the closed bridge. According to 1Limburg emergency services are present.

It is still unknown what caused the houseboat to become loose. This may have happened due to a combination of the way the boat was tied and the fast-flowing water, a spokesperson for the water board said.

Due to the strong current, the 120-meter-wide spillway broke over a width of 50 meters on Wednesday. As a result, the houseboats were in danger of leaning crookedly. That is why about thirty boats were evacuated. A spillway is a raised wall that is intended to hold back water, but some water is allowed to flow over it at high tide.

Rijkswaterstaat is investigating what measures are needed.
