House Republicans Request Recordings and Transcripts of Biden’s Interviews with Special Counsel Hur
In a recent development, House Republicans have made a request for the recordings and transcripts of special counsel Robert Hur’s interviews with President Biden. This comes after a lengthy report by Hur criticized the President’s handling of classified documents. Although the report did not charge Mr. Biden with a crime, it stated that he “willfully retained and disclosed classified materials after his vice presidency when he was a private citizen.”
The Republican chairmen of the House Oversight, Judiciary, and Ways and Means Committees have written a letter to the Justice Department, urging them to provide all materials related to Hur’s interviews with President Biden. This includes transcripts, audio and video recordings, and any other records pertinent to the investigation. The committee chairmen are particularly interested in materials related to the interview with Mark Zwonitzer, the ghostwriter of Mr. Biden’s memoir, who the special counsel accused of sharing government secrets and documents related to a 2015 call with Ukraine’s prime minister.
The House Republicans argue that these materials are relevant to the ongoing impeachment investigation into President Biden. They have been trying to establish evidence of wrongdoing by the President, specifically in relation to his family’s foreign business dealings in China and Ukraine, as well as allegations of accepting bribes. However, their investigations have thus far failed to uncover any substantial evidence against the President.
The lawmakers believe that Mr. Biden’s handling of classified documents is a crucial aspect of their investigation, and they see Hur’s report as instrumental in determining whether there are sufficient grounds to draft articles of impeachment. They have stated that they are prepared to compel the production of these materials if necessary. The deadline for the Justice Department to provide the requested materials is set for February 19.
President Biden’s personal attorney, Bob Bauer, addressed this issue in an interview with “Face the Nation.” He acknowledged that transcripts of the interview with the special counsel exist and mentioned that discussions are underway regarding the potential release of the classified document. Given the sensitivity of the information, it is unclear at this point whether the transcripts will be made public.
As this story unfolds, it is evident that House Republicans are intent on pursuing their investigations into President Biden’s alleged misconduct. The request for recordings and transcripts of Hur’s interviews signifies their commitment to uncovering any wrongdoing and determining whether impeachment proceedings are warranted. While the outcome of these investigations remains uncertain, it is clear that both sides are gearing up for a battle that will have significant implications for the Biden administration.
