House of Representatives wants a ‘national internet crime reporter’ – Computer – News

A motion calling on the government to appoint a national internet crime rapporteur was adopted by a large majority in the Lower House. Such a rapporteur should help in the prevention of online crime.

CDA MP Madelaine van Toorenburg submitted the motion with the explanation that the number of registered crimes has increased for the first time in years. According to her, the cause is a high rise in online crime. She speaks of ‘complex matter’ and tells the NOS that ‘many steps still have to be taken in the field of prevention, detection and prosecution of online crime.

The Netherlands already has a national rapporteur on trafficking in human beings and sexual violence. It reports to the government on the nature and extent of these issues, and monitors the effects of policy. The National Rapporteur on Internet Crime should do this in areas related to online crime, such as ransomware. Justice and Security Minister Ferd Grapperhaus is going to study the proposal, but points out that much is already being done in the fight against online fraud and extortion.
