A large majority of the House of Representatives wants the Ukrainian flag to be hoisted on the House of Representatives on February 24. That day marks two years since the war in Ukraine began with an invasion by Russia.
It is very unusual for foreign flags to be hoisted on the House of Representatives building. Normally only the Dutch tricolor and the flag of the European Union fly there.
‘Powerful signal’
The proposal to raise the Ukrainian flag on February 24 was submitted by party leader Dassen van Volt, during the discussion of the Defense Budget. He sees it as a “strong signal to the Ukrainians that we will continue to stand behind them.” According to Dassen, the struggle of the Ukrainians is “also our struggle”.
VVD, GroenLinks-PvdA, NSC, BBB, D66, CDA, SGP, ChristenUnie, Party for the Animals and JA21 supported the call to the Presidium, the executive board of the House led by Chairman Bosma. The PVV did not support Volt’s motion.
