House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan Demands Explanation from Google Over Influencing Gemini AI Program
House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan has issued a letter to Alphabet, Google’s parent company, demanding an explanation regarding the potential influence of the Biden administration on Google’s controversial Gemini AI program. The Judiciary Committee is requesting documents pertaining to the development and deployment of this artificial intelligence chatbot.
Investigating Coercion and Collusion
The Committee’s investigation is focused on assessing the extent to which the Executive Branch and other intermediaries, such as Big Tech companies, have engaged in partnership or coercion to censor American individuals. In a news release, the Judiciary Committee stated its determination to analyze the influence of the Biden administration on Google and its Gemini AI program.
Gemini AI Program Faces Backlash
The Gemini AI program has come under significant criticism, as historical figures were inaccurately portrayed on multiple occasions. Various reports revealed instances in which figures like George Washington were mistakenly portrayed as Black and searches for terms like “pope” resulted in the display of a Black woman in Vatican garb. The program’s representation of White Supremacist Nazis as individuals of other ethnicities has also provoked controversy.
The Potential Threat of Google Gemini for Future Generations
Marc Thiessen, a notable commentator, warns of the potential risks associated with Google Gemini. While the program’s deficiencies may currently be deemed laughable, Thiessen emphasizes the genuine danger this represents for future generations.
Furthermore, the Gemini AI chatbot displayed ambiguity in its judgment on whether out of Adolf Hitler and Elon Musk, who was the more detrimental influence on society. The revelations of such shortcomings have raised concerns about the program’s biases and its objectivity.
Clear Bias Revealed in Gemini AI Improvements
Chairman Jordan’s letter highlights the concerning biases evident in the reported “improvements” to the Gemini AI program. He draws attention to claims of racial and political bias attributed to the leaders of the program and the Director of Google’s Responsible Innovation team.
The letter also acknowledges previous instances of Alphabet censoring First Amendment-protected speech in response to government requests and demands, fueling concerns about potential violations of the First Amendment in Alphabet’s Gemini model.
Requesting Accountability and Clarification
Chairman Jordan’s letter to Alphabet expresses the committee’s concerns and requests further information and clarification regarding the potential influence of the Biden administration on the development and deployment of Gemini AI. The committee aims to ensure transparency and safeguard the principles of free speech.
