Exactly two years ago Danny Geerts gave his last interview Gazette of Antwerp. That was after a disgraceful forfeit defeat to Union on the last matchday of the regular competition in the first division. After that season, Beerschot was relegated to the Challenger Pro League without a chance. “A low point in the history of the club,” Geerts said at the time. But look. One day two years later, Beerschot can become champion in the second division. “Two years ago we were in such a deep position. Everything was bad. But today the sky is clearing again. Typical Beerschot. All or nothing. Never gray, never boring. And I am not exaggerating when I say that last season was one of the most beautiful I have ever experienced,” says Geerts from the UZA in Edegem.

Beerschot’s resident journalist has been following the club for more than sixty years. “There was the heyday with stars like Emmerich, Sanon and Tomaszewski. But you can’t compare that with now. What Beerschot has achieved in the past year is very exceptional. The situation was known: no money, letting strong holders go and hoping for the best. I thought a place in the top six would be the highest possible achievement. Direct promotion? I didn’t even dare to dream of that,” says Geerts, who wants to take the opportunity to celebrate two people. “Fred Van den Steen and Gyorgy Csepregi have done a lot of work. They have always kept the fans informed of the financial situation and achieved astonishing results with limited resources. My respect for those two gentlemen is very great.”

Due to circumstances, Geerts will not be able to be present at the Freethiel on Sunday. He will also have to miss next Friday’s home match against Patro Eisden. “I don’t want to talk about myself too much. It’s a shame I can’t be there, but I can also follow the matches here very well. Everyone in the department knows what is at stake. I already received mauve and white flowers this week. Hopefully I can celebrate on Sunday from my hospital bed,” says Geerts with a smile.
