Dustin Procita was at home in his California home when he suddenly heard a loud bang in the usually quiet neighborhood.
– I started to smell smoke, so I went out to the porch. Then I saw the yard was on fire, he says NBC News.
Several witnesses are said to have seen something resembling “a basketball on fire” shortly before the explosion.
Mysterious globe fell from the sky
Burnt
It was November 5 that the Penn Valley Fire Department responded to a house fire in the area.
They were eventually able to bring the fire under control, but by then the house had already burned to the ground.
Both Procita and his wife escaped the crash unscathed, but the couple’s dog died in the fire.
Shortly before the fire, a meteor-like object was observed in the sky.
– They said it was a meteor. “I couldn’t see what it was, but everyone I spoke to said it was a fireball in the sky,” Procita said.
Journalist Schnell shared a clip of the meteor on Twitter.
I can’t rule it out
Firefighters have not yet ruled out that the fire may have been caused by a meteorite.
Firefighter Clayton Thomas told NBC News he has been contacted by several people who believe they have seen the meteor.
– The meteor is a potential cause, but it’s too early to guarantee anything.
However, it is very rare for meteors to hit homes. Procita says she feels lucky to be alive.
– They said it’s a one in four trillion chance. I might as well buy a lottery ticket today, she concluded.
