“Since the start of the heatwave last weekend, the BC Coroner’s Service has seen a significant increase in reported deaths where it is suspected that extreme heat may have contributed,” Chief Coroner Lisa Lapointe said in a statement. CNN, Wednesday (30/6/2021).
The coroner’s service typically receives about 130 reports of deaths over a four-day period. From Friday to Monday, at least 233 deaths were reported, the chief coroner said, adding this number will increase as data continues to be updated.
The statement said the coroner is now gathering information to determine the cause and manner of death and whether hot weather played a role.

“Exposure to environmental heat can lead to severe or fatal outcomes, especially in the elderly, infants and young children and those with chronic diseases,” the statement added.
