Hotline in the making for child labor by young influencers | Inland

Outgoing State Secretary Dennis Wiersma of SZW announced the plan on Saturday evening in the television program Kassa. That researched children who can be seen, for example, in YouTube videos or Instragram posts about their family life. Especially if the parents earn money by advertising companies, it can be seen as child labour, according to the program. If families live on it, it’s ‘normal work’, added Wiersma.

The Social Affairs and Employment Inspectorate published the findings of an exploratory study in December last year. “Where is the line between vlogging every now and then for fun, creatively earning some extra cash or really being commercially engaged under pressure?”, wrote then State Secretary Bas van ‘t Wout about this. A larger investigation by the Inspectorate to come to better rules on this is still ongoing.

The findings of the inspection investigation will be published early next year, the ministry expects. In addition to the limits for children who appear on social media, the role of parents and the role of companies that pay for advertising in which children appear are also examined. According to the Inspectorate, according to the current rules, these remain out of harm’s way because formally it is not the children who are hired, but their parents.
