Hot wine in the mood of mulled wine and other news in the music top of «Radio Naba» / Article / LSM.lv

This week in the news of “Radio Naba” music chart – a mixture of playful electronics with modernized surf-rock from “Gaismas”, Latvia indie music legend Edgars Šubrovskis, mulled wine warming single “Nocturne”, massive and mesmerizing techno from “PLUNEPTUNE”, solo runs by Casper Klausen, marching and powerful manifesto against Putin, John Carpenter’s “Weeping Ghost”, Scottish post-rock the icon “Mogwai”, the Berlin project “OST + Front” single for people who go to the heart of “Rammstein” combination with something like a German hit in a metal suit, Nottingham electronic punks “Sleaford Mods” and slasher/electro offer for a new Parisian duo “Starbabe”.

“Light” – “Voice of the Heart” [“Big Girl”]

“Hello, Radio NABA. My name is Edgar and I live in America, ”begins the application for the single“ Voice of the Heart ”from the project“ Light ”in our e-mail. If you take a closer look, you can find out that it is Edgars Legzdins who has at least indicated Chicago in Illinois as his place of residence in his Bandcamp account. “Voice of the Heart” is a song from him, judging by all, the debut album “Fight”, which was released already in spring – May. Musically, it’s an interesting mix of playful (“Yellow Postmen”) electronics with something from a modernized surf-rock.

Shubrovsky – “Less” [pašizdots]

There are no comments here. I would like to call this Edgar – Shubrovsky – Latvia for the last 20 years indie the greatest music legend. Member and leader of the groups “Kartaga”, “Hospital Street”, “Manta” and others. This seems to be the first single that Shubrovsky has released under his own name. According to the author, there is an idea for a solo album, but “maybe [dziesma] is just like that ”.

“Alleys” – “Nightingale” [pašizdots]

Despite the fact that the group “alleys”, consisting of Kirils Ēcis, Spāre Vītols and Reinis Žodžiks, will release their second studio recording “australia” in the beginning of 2021, in practically all media this association is announced in the debut department. This can be understood, because really nothing has been heard about the group “alleys” so far. The new plate (I hope also in the literal sense of the word) is introduced by the rather dark, but at the same time warming wine-warming single “Nocturne”. “The song reflects a person’s desire for closeness to himself, others, and everything in between, a relentless search inside and outside,” says the band about the composition. For my part, I can add that musically this is a good 2000s chillwave and the 1990s in Ibiza chill-out sample compilation.

“PLUNEPTUNE” – “Body” [pašizdots]

Usually the other way around, but this time from chill-out medicine for the transition to the Great. PLUNEPTUNE’s latest single “Body” is a massive, arousing and mesmerizing techno that would be perfect for 3.00-4.00 in the morning, when the body is still cleansing, but not yet completely tired. I will not lie – unfortunately I know very little about Ani Varja, who is the author of this project. Just that she was born in Yakutsk, Russia, but lives in the capital of Latvia. Unfortunately, she also can’t find her “Bandcamp” account, because she would be very happy, especially now that the nightclubs are closed, to refresh in the waves offered by “Body” for much longer. One of the strongest singles in Latvian electronic music this year.

Casper Clausen – “Used To Think” [“City Slang”]

Kasper Klausen is perhaps less known by his real name, but music lovers will certainly not be unfamiliar with Danish synth-rock the name of the group ‘Efterklang’, of which Klausen is a member. The last “Efterklang” album “Altid Sammen” was released only last year. 20 years later, “Efterklang” Klausen has just announced his debut (!) Solo album “Better Ways”, which will be released in the beginning of 2021. The album’s first single “Used to Think” was produced by “Sonic Bloom” from the famous band “Spaceman 3”, so it’s no wonder that the band’s work is the first thing that comes to mind when listening to “Used To Think”. In any case, in terms of sound, this single is definitely closer to “Spaceman 3” than “Efterklang”. Among other things, Sonic Boom has masterpieces as a producer, such as Panda Bear’s album Tomboy and Beach House’s 7.

“Jello Biafra & The Guantanamo School of Medicine” – “We Created Putin” [“Alternative Tentacles”]

The legendary San Francisco punk-rock Dead Kennedys soloist Eric Reed Busher, or Jello Biafra, also known as a left-wing human rights activist, released a new album less than a month ago with his latest project, Jello Biafra & The Guantanamo School of Medicine. The title of the album’s single “We Created Putin” says it all. A marching and powerful manifesto against Russia’s self-appointed tsar.

John Carpenter – “Weeping Ghost” [“Sacred Bones”]

Another artist whose name probably doesn’t require comments. John Carpenter, one of the most famous authors of film music soundtracks of all time, has become more obsessed with publishing music albums than with his usual work over the last decade. Also, his latest album “Lost Themes III: Alive After Death” is not related to cinema, but is simply a recording of music. Already in July, Carpenter released two singles, now followed by “Weeping Ghost” – progressive/electronica work that is likely to be a clear indication of what we will expect on the album to be released in February next year.

“Mogwai” – “Dry Fantasy” [“Rock Action”]

Cattle post-rock icons and one of the most popular groups of Radio Naba listeners of all time has announced its anniversary – tenth – studio album “As the Love Continues”. It is scheduled for release on February 19, 2021, which will coincide with Mogwai’s 25th birthday. The sequel to the 2017 album “Every Country’s Sun” was recorded in England together with producer Dave Friedman (he also worked on the previous album “Mogwai”). Atticus Ross, a member of Nine Inch Nails, and Colon Stetson, a saxophonist, have also taken part in some of the songs on the album. The first single, “Dry Fantasy”, in the style of “Mogwai”, is one of the most melancholic singles I have ever heard.

“OST + FRONT” – “Honka Honka” [“Out of Line”]

The project from Berlin “OST + Front” released a new album “Dein Helfer In Der Not” in the summer. Its single “Honka Honka” will appeal to people who like the combination of “Rammstein” with something like a German hit in a metal suit.

“Sleaford Mods” – “Mork n Mindy” (feat. Billy Nomates) [“Rough Trade”]

Nottingham’s electronic slacks, Sleaford Mods, have been very productive in recent years. Starting in 2017, every next one has brought a new record. The latest album “Spare Ribs” will be released in January 2021, but the single “Mork n Mindy” in collaboration with singer Billja Noumeits has already left us. Jason Williamson, the leader of Sleaford Mods, described the song as “the sound of central heating and Sunday dinner in 1982,” and I find it hard to disagree.

“Starbabe” – “Scandal” [“Black Venus”]

A new duo from Paris consisting of Elodie (vocals and lyrics) and Idan Gavriel (synthesizers and drum machines) have released the single “Scandal” in the summer, which is currently coming to the top of “Radio Naba”. Musically, Scandal could put a Halloween-style shooter slasher/electro style.
