Military alliance North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) stated that Ukraine can expect more shipments of heavy weapons from Western countries soon. This was conveyed by NATO when President Vladimir Putin praise the team Russia which is said to have taken control of a city in Ukraine recently.
As reported AFP, Monday (16/1/2023), NATO’s statement also came as the death toll from a Russian missile attack that hit an apartment block in the city of Dnipro rose to 30 people. Rescue workers continue to search for potential survivors buried under the rubble.
Secretary General (Secretary General) of NATO Jens Stoltenberg revealed that Ukraine could expect more heavy weapons, following a request by the Kiev authorities to its Western allies to send combat vehicles, artillery and missiles which it says are key in defending itself.
“The promise of heavy armament equipment in recent times has been important — and I expect more in the near future,” Stoltenberg told the German newspaper, Handelsblattahead of a meeting of countries coordinating the supply of weapons to Ukraine.
Stoltenberg’s statement came days after Russia claimed control of the city of Soledar, which is in Donetsk, eastern Ukraine. Putin hailed the achievement of the Moscow troops as a great success.
“There is a positive dynamic, everything is developing according to plan,” Putin said in an interview broadcast on Sunday (15/1) local time.
“I hope our fighters will please us more than once again,” he added.
The Russian Ministry of Defense announced last week that its troops had “completed the liberation” of the city of Soledar. This is not a significant achievement as Russian troops continue to advance towards what it has called its main target since October last year — the transport junction at Bakhmut.
