Jakarta –
Government Iran ordered the expulsion of two German diplomat on Wednesday (1/3/2023). The expulsion was a retaliatory step after Berlin took similar action in response to the death penalty handed down to a citizen with dual citizenship.
Reported by the news agency AFPOn Wednesday (1/3/2023), Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani said the two diplomats had been ordered to leave in response to “interference… by the German government in Iran’s internal and judicial affairs”.
Last week, the government German announced that they were expelling two Iranian diplomats in response to death sentence imposed on dual national Jamshid Sharmahd, who is also a US resident.
“The Iranian regime is fighting its own people at all costs and has no respect for human rights,” German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said at the time.
Sharmahd has been convicted for his alleged role in the 2008 mosque bombing in the southern Iranian city of Shiraz that killed 14 people and injured 300 others.
The 67-year-old’s family strongly rejects the accusations and called on Berlin to “act immediately to save his life”.
Court Iran does not recognize dual citizenship.
The court said Sharmahd had planned to commit 23 “terrorist” acts, of which he succeeded in five.
