Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – French and German plans to start talks with Russia failed. Leaders of the European Union (EU) do not want to have a dialogue with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
This is related to dialogue efforts to neutralize the bloc’s relations with the White Bear, which have been hot since 2014. Relations deteriorated as the Kremlin annexed Crimee, in the Black Sea as its territory.
This is opposed by European leaders. The EU agreed the territory still belongs to Ukraine.
But the 27 European leaders, notably the Baltic close to Russia, have yet to agree to start talks. For the close neighbor of the White Bear Country, Moscow will not change behavior.
“We don’t see a radical change in Putin’s behavior,” said Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda.
The French and German proposals to lighten the mood came after United States President Joe Biden and Putin met last week. But the Council of Europe agreed to bring demands to the Kremlin before organizing high-level talks.
“We remember the visit to Moscow and the results were not so positive for the EU,” said Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas.
“The Council of Europe expects Russian leaders to demonstrate more constructive political engagement and commitment and cease action against the EU and its member states, as well as against third countries,” the 27 leaders said in a statement in Brussels.
There has been no official comment from Russia on this matter.
It’s not just the EU this week Russia is also tense with Britain over Crimea. Even Russian jets reportedly fired bombs at the British warship, the HMF Defender.
Russia even summoned the British ambassador in Moscow to give a stern warning. Even so, Britain denied the country gave a warning shot.
Russia, the British said, only fired practice shots. Moreover, the state of Elizabeth insisted, her country passing through the international area does not belong to Russia.
