Hosteltur’s Infographic showcases Turkey’s unique destinations that surpass Spain’s sun and sand.

Turkey, Spain’s great rival in the Mediterranean basin, has reached 1.80 million hotel beds and is expected to add 200,000 more between this year and the following. In the following interactive infographic you can consult the main data of the Turkish hotel industry: evolution of hotel beds, overnight stays in 2022, occupancy, source markets, evolution of incentivized hotel investments; increase in costs, number of places per destination…

200,000 new beds and 400,000 in the reclassification process

According to the official data of the Turkish government, collected in the annual report of the Turkish business association Union of Mediterranean Touristic Hoteliers and Operators (AKTOB), the number of hotel beds in licensed hotels reached 1.80 million in 2022.

When the various hotel projects now underway are completed, Turkey will add another 200,000 hotel beds.

In addition, around 400,000 existing beds are in a reclassification process, according to AKTOB.

Antalya: investments aimed at 5-star hotels

The most powerful sun and beach destination in Turkey is Antalya, with 606,000 hotel beds. It even surpasses the country’s capital, Istanbul, a city with 232,000 beds.

Other notable coastal destinations are Muğla (235,000 beds) and Izmir (88,000).

As AKTOB explains, Antalya received investment incentives for 100 hotels in 2022, “especially for renovation”.

Thus, through these “incentivized investments”, nearly 68,000 hotel beds will be renewed in 71 hotels in the province.

And, on the other hand, with the investment incentives received during 2022, 29 hotels will also be built in Antalya, which will add approximately 11,000 beds. In other words, they will be large establishments, with an average of 379 rooms.

Thus, projects for completely new hotel facilities in Antalya total 373 million euros, while projects for hotel renovations reach 571 million euros of investment, according to information compiled by AKTOB.

A good part of the investments in new hotels will go to the five-star segment. Specifically, there are 11 new five-star hotels planned in Antalya with a combined budget of 273 million euros. In addition, 457 million euros will be invested in the renovation of 51 five-star hotels.

What are incentivized hotel investments?

As explained by the Turkish economist and tourism researcher Erol Karabulut“incentivized hotel investment” has been essential to boost the growth of the hotel offer in this destination.

Thus, the incentives given by the Turkish government to promote hotel investment include tax deductions and exemptions; Social Security supports; support for imports in ten areas, etc. “Turkey has built 30% of the total number of hotel beds with these incentives,” explains this expert.
