Hostage taker only worked as an Albert Heijn deliverer for a few weeks

The man who held a customer of the Apple Store on Leidseplein hostage for hours last Tuesday had only recently worked at Albert Heijn. He came to Leidseplein with a truck from the delivery service.

Several employees say they didn’t know him well because he was new. He would have mainly driven evening shifts. Several employees say it was even his first ride alone. He should have driven to Beverwijk to deliver the groceries. They say they suspect that he started working as a delivery boy in order to be able to commit the hostage situation.

A spokesperson for Albert Heijn confirms that the man had only been working for the company for a few weeks. “I can’t speculate about what his motives were or his plan. That is something the police should investigate. I can imagine that the gut feeling is alive among employees, but then I would have to speculate and that would be unwise.”

She cannot confirm whether it was actually his first ride alone and whether he should have gone to Beverwijk, but she does say that he deviated from the route he should have taken with the groceries. “He shouldn’t have been on Leidseplein.”

The small truck of the Albert Heijn was standing during the hostage situation for the Apple Store. Only later it turned out that the hostage-taker had been the driver of the truck.
