Hospitals: the price of temporary doctor guards explodes

Doctors are overwhelmed by offers of one-off missions. As summer approaches and staff shortages are increasingly felt in hospital services, establishments do not hesitate to put their hands in their pockets to try to recover additional staff. As reported The Parisianwhile 24-hour call duty is officially capped at 1,170.04 euros per month, some doctors receive much more attractive offers.

Thus, in Paimpol (Côtes-d’Armor), temporary doctors were offered 2,500 euros net for 24 hours of emergency care in July or August. 2,000 euros are offered on the side of Nancy (Meurthe-et-Moselle), 1,800 euros net in Langon (Gironde)… To this are added benefits in kind such as accommodation available, meals taken care of…

A phenomenon that does not surprise the directors of hospital establishments who have agreed to respond to daily life in the Ile-de-France region. “I’m not going to throw stones at them, they simply have no choice. Some emergency physicians are one-upmanship and fiercely negotiate their price: 2,200, 2,400, 2,800… up to 4,000 euros per day! Either the hospital accepts, or it must operate in degraded mode, or even close its emergency room. They know it and play on it. You cannot imagine the pressure, “explains the director of a hospital in the south of France.

A problem of fairness

A power of pressure denounced by certain health professionals, such as Martin Hirsch, the boss of the Hospitals of Paris, who a few days ago described the temporary workers as “mercenaries”. The escalation of the tariff of the guards creating problems of “equity” between doctors. “In two or three guards, a temporary worker can earn the same as a professional in post who respects the rule and works hard”, underlines the manager of a hospital in the south of France, on condition of anonymity.

Same observation on the side of the nurses. Some do not hesitate to voluntarily choose the interim. “They are paid much more than the others when they occupy the same position, have the same skills, the same number of years of study. But they do not know the team or the equipment. Apart from working and recovering money, they do not get involved in the life of the hospital”, laments Frédéric Adnet, head of emergencies in Bobigny (Seine-Saint-Denis), in the columns of Parisian.

For others, the problem does not come from the use of temporary workers, but is the consequence of the deep crisis that the hospital is going through. “I say above all: ‘Fed up with the non-revaluation of the caregivers of the hospital.’ By focusing on temporary work, we divert attention from the real problem. However, if the salaries were correct, there would not be so many temporary workers, “said Loïc Pen, emergency doctor in Creil (Oise). But the phenomenon has continued to increase in recent years. Nearly 10,000 doctors would, at present, followers of the interim.
