Hospitals in the USA: – Shouts warning:

For the second year in a row, Americans are celebrating Thanksgiving with growing corona infection as a backdrop. Despite rising rates of infection in the United States, the situation was different last year.

In November one year ago, 100,000 new corona cases were registered per day for 27 days. More than 90,000 corona patients were admitted to US hospitals.

This year’s celebration is therefore chopped more pleasurable – with both fewer cases of infection and hospitalized corona patients. Nevertheless, about 95,000 cases per day have recently been registered – an increase of 9 percent from a week ago.

Rapid increase

Employees at US hospitals are still working in high gear with a high number of corona patients. Hospitals in states such as Michigan, Minnesota, Colorado and Arizona are now seeing an alarmingly rapid increase in the number of patients.

In Michigan – where hospitals are hardest hit – medical personnel from the US military are mobilized to assist the congested health services, writes CBS News. The personnel will arrive next week and will contribute to several hospitals.

More than 1,400 patients were admitted with confirmed or suspected coronary heart disease in the state on Wednesday.

– Right now, our doctors and nurses report that the vast majority of their patients are unvaccinated or have not yet received a booster dose. We can all do our part to reduce the burden on the health service by vaccinating ourselves, booking vaccinations for booster doses, and continuing to take precautions to keep ourselves and our loved ones safe, “said Governor Gretchen Whitmer in a statement released by CBS News.

Strong pressure

In parts of California, too, health care is on the verge of collapse. Despite the fact that large parts of the state have among the lowest infection rates in the country, parts of California are struggling with the population being skeptical of face masks and vaccines.

In central parts of California, health care is under severe pressure, he writes The Guardian. Plans are now being made to transfer patients to hospitals in other regions.

– We run around like crazy. (…) The patient signals are triggered, the alarms go off – we just do not have the resources, says nurse Rachel Spray at Kaiser Hospital in Fresno, California.

The new wave is also hitting hospitals in southeastern Arizona hard, the news agency writes AP. In the border county of Cochise, the hospitals are warning of a lack of resources and nurses, as well as patients who have to stand in long queues to receive health care.

Special holiday

When President Joe Biden delivered his annual Thanksgiving speech, he said that this year’s celebration is extra special due to last year’s unusual circumstances.

– This is always a special time in the United States. But this year, the Thanksgiving blessings are especially significant, Biden said in a pre-recorded video released by the White House.

– When we give thanks for what we have, we also hold in our hearts those we have lost, and those who have lost so much. And those who have an empty seat at their dinner table this year as a result of this virus or another cruel fate or accident, he said.

Thanksgiving, which is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November, is this year’s largest family celebration in the United States. For many millions of Americans who live far away from their families, it is a welcome opportunity to travel home and gather around turkey, sweet potatoes and other goodies.

Expecting more travelers

Last week, US aviation authorities wrote the TSA in one press release that this year they expect that 20 million will go through the security check between 19 and 28 November.

– We expect that the level of travel this holiday season can approach as it was before the pandemic, and we are staffed and prepared for more travelers, said David Pekoske, head of the aviation authorities, in the press release, and added:

– With the vaccination rate improving nationally and greater confidence in safe travel, there will be more travelers, so plan ahead, be vigilant and friendly, he said.
