Hospitals are full again, ambulances go around for hours

However, no one submitted signals to the institutions

In Sofia, the beds were increased by another 306

In Varna there is not a single place in the intensive sector

We will open beds, but there are no doctors, claim from Blagoevgrad

Crowded hospitals, lack of beds and ambulances circling for hours in an attempt to find a place for the patient – the familiar picture from the peaks of previous COVID waves is repeated.

This established an inspection of “24 hours” among the hospitals in the country, and victims told about the troubles of their relatives to receive medical care.

However, no one submitted signals to the institutions, and the Minister of Health Stoycho Katsarov understood the individual cases from the media, he explained on Friday.

Unequipped beds that cannot accommodate a patient in a more serious condition, full and even overcapacity,

lacking

and exhausted

staff

are among the main reasons that make it difficult to accept patients. This is especially true in hospitals, where a large part of the rest of the pathology is accepted, including emergencies, such as the Sofia University Hospital “St. Anna”.

There, with a capacity of 160 beds, 16 of which are intensive, 168 COVID patients were treated on Thursday. More beds are placed in a room, which is uncomfortable for the patients themselves, but the goal of the medics is to return fewer people. Of those 168 vaccinated, only 6 were vaccinated and none was in the intensive care unit, according to the medical institution.

At the moment, a total of 5 departments have been transformed there in COVID – infectious diseases, cardiology, gastroenterology, endocrinology and pulmonology.

Despite their efforts, however, on Wednesday night they failed to receive 77-year-old Stefan Manev, who developed symptoms and a severe clinical picture in just one day. He and his wife live in a village near Elin Pelin. His wife, 72-year-old Sonya Maneva, was the first to show symptoms. She took a PCR test on Monday and it turned out to be positive. Until Tuesday night, Stefan showed almost no symptoms, but suddenly began to get worse, says their son Marin Manev. An ambulance was called on Wednesday night, but due to their condition and accompanying illnesses at the hospital in Elin Pelin, they said they could not accept them.

in an attempt to find a place for Stefan. For Sonya, they managed to find a bed in the Infectious Diseases Hospital earlier.

Their tour starts from the Fourth City, which the coordination center tells them has seats. Until they arrive, however, they are busy. The situation is repeated in “St. Anna”, “Alexandrovska”, ISUL, MMA. They also pass through Vtora Gradska, where there is a bed, but no breathing apparatus, which is why they do not accept more severe cases there. Eventually, the man was admitted to St. Catherine’s, but during this time he became even worse and was intubated a little later.

After the palpable pressure, an order to increase the number of beds in the capital’s hospitals was issued on Friday by the director of SRZI, Dr. Dancho Penchev. First there was one from October 12 – for 224 new beds, now 82 more have been added to them, mainly in large public hospitals and some smaller private ones.

There are currently 329 beds in all public and private hospitals, of which 24 – intensive. If necessary, their number can be increased to 550, incl. 28 intensive, as at the peak of the second wave at the end of 2020, specified by RHI. The situation is calmer in Veliko Tarnovo, where about half of the beds are still occupied – 175 out of 268. The maximum is 299 beds plus 22 intensive beds, said the head of RHI Dr. Evgenia Nedeva.

Let’s get to the branches in MBAL – Blagoevgrad, they have already become COVID, and the hospitalized are 100. There is a possibility to convert another ward with about 20 beds. There are 12 places in the intensive care unit and 10 are already occupied.
