In France, there are more than 5,000 resuscitation beds, on a long-term basis, able to accommodate all types of patients. Since the start of the health crisis, the country has been able to add beds for other services, such as recovery rooms in operating theaters, but it is also necessary to add ventilators and dedicated staff to welcome patients. Covid. “Thanks to these ephemeral beds, we were able to reach the 10,000 resuscitation beds available during the first wave, 8,000 during the second wave and we are today at 7,503 free resuscitation beds”, explains journalist Ambroise Bouleis on the tray of 20 hours.
In a document published last summer, the Ministry of Health mentioned the possibility of going from 5,000 beds to 12,500 intensive care beds. The note explains that this provision requires many caregivers who cannot be present throughout the national territory at the same time, which implies numerous deprogramming of operations. “To date, the government wishes to limit the use of this kind of practice”, concludes the journalist.
