Hospital officials say Pelé is in stable condition

AL RAYYAN, Qatar — The Torch Hotel outside the Khalifa Stadium received a message from its side on Saturday sending its best wishes to Pele, the three-time World Cup winner from Brazil who has been battling colon cancer.

In São Paulo, officials at the Israelite Albert Einstein Hospital said in a statement Saturday that Pele, 82, was in stable condition after being admitted earlier this week to reevaluate chemotherapy. Pele has had “a good response” to treatment for a respiratory infection, the statement said, and his health has not deteriorated in the past 24 hours.

The hospital’s statement came after a Brazilian newspaper suggested Pelé was no longer responding to chemotherapy treatments and had been transferred to palliative care, suggesting he would no longer take aggressive measures to fight his cancer.

The newspaper report did not suggest that his death was imminent and the hospital did not say that Pele had been transferred to the hospice.

Similar scares have occurred in recent years whenever Pele, one of the world’s most famous athletes, has entered the hospital for treatment.

Pele’s Instagram account has attempted to dismiss this week’s most recent reports that he was back in the hospital.

“Friends, I’m in the hospital for my monthly visit,” said a message below another photo of him on a building in Doha. “It’s always nice to receive positive messages like this. Thanks to Qatar for this tribute and to all who give me good vibes! »

Pele’s daughter Kely Nascimento said on Instagram earlier this week that there were “no surprises or emergencies” in her father’s condition.

“Much alarm in the media today about my father’s health,” Nascimento wrote at the time. “There are no emergencies or dire new predictions. I’ll be there for New Year’s and promise to post some pics.
