LGBTIQ adolescents need to be protected from harmful pseudo-therapies
Salzburg (OTS) – „Pseudo-therapies and treatments aimed at changing sexual orientation or gender identity cause massive damage and should be strongly rejected. Young people in particular need to be protected from these harmful practices
“, Says Josef Lindner, chairman of the HOSI Salzburg, on the occasion of the motion decided today in the equal treatment committee. The human rights initiative therefore welcomes the renewed push towards a ban on so-called “conversion therapies”.
„Imagine the absurdity of therapy for heterosexuals – a ‘reversal’ of sexual orientation towards the same gender. How can one believe, even for a moment, that on the one hand this is possible at all and on the other hand could ‘succeed’ without serious psychological consequences?
“adds Gabriele Rothuber, chairwoman of HOSI Salzburg.
“When it comes to LGBTIQ rights, Austria is only in the middle of Europe when compared to other countries,” says Rothuber, referring to the ILGA Europe Rainbow Map, which is created annually by the European umbrella organization ILGA Europe. “We have to improve significantly here if we want to become the front runners in the European Union. A legal ban on conversion therapies would be a necessary and consequent step. “
