Hosea Houngniboclose support of the businessman Olivier Bokoappeared before the Court for the Repression of Economic Offenses and Terrorism (CRIET) in Benin this Thursday, October 24, 2024. He is accused of inciting rebellion following publications on social networks criticizing the president Patrice Talon. His words, described as a call to revolt, were the subject of particular attention in the context of the so-called affair of “coup attempt.” »
During the hearing, Houngnibo denied any intention to cause unrest. He explained that his messages, shared in online discussion groups, were intended solely to participate in a debate of opinion, without intending to encourage a rebellion. He expressed regret over the interpretation of his remarks, stressing that he was only seeking to exercise his freedom of expression in a democratic framework.
Houngnibo’s lawyers argued on his behalf, asking that the court take into account his lack of criminal record and his limited role in the case. They also insisted that this is an expression of opinion, not a criminal act. The judge decided to postpone the case until November 28, 2024, giving the accused a few more weeks to learn his fate.
