In the Dahme-Spreewald district in the German state of Brandenburg, three horses have been reported to have fallen ill with the West Nile virus. Two of horses have died as a result of the infection. According to Royal GD, the infection in Germany underlines the importance of good monitoring in the Netherlands, so that the virus can be traced as quickly as possible when it appears in the Netherlands.
Veterinarians can contribute to the monitoring of the West Nile virus in the Netherlands by sending in serum blood samples from horses with neurological symptoms during the transmission season, from June to November. The examination for antibodies against West Nile virus in the context of exclusion diagnostics is free of charge. This diagnostic is financed by a subsidy from the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality. You can submit until November 30.
