According to the animal welfare association, animals have no place at such events. The horse owner contradicts: the animals were not stressed.

The Bremen animal protection association has criticized the use of horses at the opening of the 989th Bremen Freimarkt. Big and little Roland were dressed up and led through the crowd of people across the market square on two horses. Meanwhile, trams also ran. “Horses are flight animals and are not there to be used for entertainment at festivities,” says a post that the animal welfare association published on Facebook and Instagram on Saturday evening.

The topic is being actively discussed on social networks. Many agree with the club’s criticism, one user suggests a petition to prevent the use of horses next year. A number of comments also advocate a ban on fireworks at the opening of the open market, as this would also cause massive stress for animals. But there are also users who are less critical of the use of the horses and think that the horses look relaxed.

Horses from the Visbek Riding Fanfare Corps also took part in the open market parade

The horse owner also sees it that way. The animals come from the Visbek Equestrian Fanfare Corps in the Vechta district. The club’s horses also lead the open market parade and, according to the club, are gradually getting used to such performances. They also know fanfares and trumpets and were not stressed by the performance at the open market.

This is contradicted by animal protection association spokeswoman Gaby Schwab, who recognizes signs of stress in the animals. “Even if they are trained to do so – they are living beings. What if they get scared? What if a horse kicks out and suddenly people or the animal are injured. What happens then? Who takes responsibility?”

The association demands that such an action should not be repeated and that no live animals should be displayed. “Horses have no place at this event,” says Schwab. The Bremen economic department is responsible for the opening of the small free market. According to the department, the situation was discussed in advance with the animals’ owners. “Both did not see them as problematic based on the animals’ experience,” said a spokesman.
